Nothing feels as quintessentially American as driving a convertible in the summer with the top down and the radio blaring summer anthems. And while many of the songs change from year to year, there are at least 5 that you should keep in a playlist for when the sun is shining:
“Walking on Sunshine” Katrina and the Waves (1985)
This radio hit from 1985 hits on the good vibes of summer with a positive message, catchy arrangement, and stellar vocals. We dare you to not smile while listening.
“All Summer Long” Kid Rock (2008)
There is something about the nostalgia for the south in this song. It is a tacky addition to this list, but in the car cruising down the highway, you’d hardly notice because you were having a good time all summer long.
“California Gurls” Katy Perry 2010
You can’t help but jam out to the absurdly cheery, bubblegum-smacking melody and catchy lyrics in this global megahit (featuring Snoop Dogg, no less). Perfect for driving down the highway with your windows down, “California Gurls” is a summer tune for the ages.
“Centuries” Fallout Boy 2015
This recent hit is hard to turn off. With a fast beat and solid percussion you just want to head-bang in unison with anyone around you (which can be awkward with headphones in).
“Drop it like its Hot” Snoop Dogg, featuring Pharrell (2004)
When this song comes over the radio everyone drops what they’re doing immediately to listen. Whether you hate it or love it, it is no secret that every ultimate summertime party playlist needs this 2004 smash.
