Ford Focus Electric Vehicle Coming in 2011
An all-electric version of the Ford Transit Connect commercial van is coming in late 2010, followed by the Ford Focus Electric in 2011.
Focus Electric is a spin on the gas-powered Ford Focus, which will be available later this year. The electrified Focus will be powered purely by batteries, which means it will never use a drop of gas and will produce zero emissions.
The Focus Electric will be rechargeable using wall outlets and is targeted to get up to 100 miles per charge, making it ideal for daily commuters. Charging the car’s lithium-ion batteries will take between six to eight hours using a 220V wall outlet or longer, using a 110V outlet.
Focus Electric will also feature a user-friendly interface display to provide the driver with information on vehicle range and battery charge.
“Ford is committed to help lead the way to find creative solutions to ensure that electrified vehicles can deliver benefits to our customers, the environment and our business around the globe in a sustainable way,” said Nancy Gioia, Ford director of Global Electrification.

Ford Navigation System Adds HOV Lane Routing Feature

Drivers of 2011 Ford, Lincoln or Mercury vehicles equipped with voice-activated navigation will now have the new high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lane routing preference feature.
HOV, or carpool lanes, are popular among commuters in highly-populated regions because they allow vehicles with multiple passengers to use designated lanes for faster travel. In Northern Virginia, for example, HOV designated lanes can cut a trip’s travel time on a popular 27-mile stretch of I-95/I-395 in half, with some 18,500 people traveling that specific route during peek commuter hours daily.
Drivers with passengers may engage the HOV guidance option on the navigation preference menu. And when a destination is entered, the system will map routes using HOV lanes where appropriate.
“We’ve worked hard to ensure our navigation system is not only extremely helpful, but exceptionally intuitive,” said Jim Buczkowski, director, Global Electrical and Electronics Systems Engineering. “We’ve added services and features such as HOV logic and others for 2011 that will help customers access exactly the information they need while they’re on the go.”

Ford Earns Fifth Energy Star Award

Ford Motor Company has earned the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s coveted 2010 ENERGY STAR Award for the fifth consecutive year.
The 2010 ENERGY STAR Award for Sustained Excellence recognizes Ford’s continued leadership and commitment to protecting the environment through energy efficiency.
In 2009, Ford improved energy efficiency in their U.S. facilities by 4.6 percent resulting in savings of approximately $15 million. Since 2000, Ford’s U.S. Facilities have improved energy efficiency by more than 30 percent. That’s equivalent to the annual energy consumed by more than 110,000 homes.
“More than ever, we at Ford Motor Company are committed to the responsible use of resources,” said George Andraos, director, Energy and Manufacturing Site Management. “Partnering with ENERGY STAR is an essential component of Ford’s plan to become economically, environmentally and socially sustainable.”

Ford’s Fiesta Movement, Chapter 2
Ford’s Fiesta Movement, a social media initiative designed to create excitement about the new Fiesta, is now moving into its second chapter. Forty people have been enlisted to tell the story of Ford’s newest car in 16 cities across the country.
Chapter 2 consists of 20 teams comprised of two agents each. Their mission is to interact with consumers online and offline, while bringing Fiesta to their communities.
“This was a natural progression from the first phase of the Fiesta Movement,” said Connie Fontaine, Ford Brand Content and Alliances manager. “Chapter 2 will still be rooted in social media, but this time the content will also live offline and find its way into new mediums. Fiesta needs to clearly be the star now as the agents share their work within their communities and beyond.”
Agents will complete a series of missions, where they will compete in challenges locally, involving their communities and opening the discussion about Fiesta.
After completing a challenge, agents will produce and place the creative content online at www.fiestamovement.com, where followers can keep up with their favorite agents. The best content will be recognized based on online interaction and consumer opinions.
One of the missions is called “Show the World UR Personality,” where agents will work with designers to design their wrap and personalize their Fiesta. The wrap that receives the most votes from fans on www.fiestamovement.com will later be available to consumers.
“Essentially, the agents will be introducing Fiesta to their communities, with local culture driving the content they create,” said Fontaine. “There will be unique opportunities for consumers to actively engage and follow along with the agent teams in their area.”
The agent teams are located in major markets, including Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Detroit, Philadelphia, Boston, Denver, San Diego, Dallas, Houston, Seattle, Orlando, Phoenix, Atlanta and Miami.

New 2011 Mustang in High Demand

The new 2011 Ford Mustang has three times as many orders than the 2010 model had during its first month. And half of these orders are requesting the car’s class-leading 20 mpg 3.7-liter V-6 engine.
“Fuel economy ranks among the top two reasons people choose vehicles,” said Steve Ling, North America Car Marketing manager. “With the 2011 Mustang lineup, we’ve found a way to offer even better fuel efficiency for V-6, GT and even Shelby GT500 performance drivers – while improving performance. And consumers are responding.”
Nearly 11,000 Mustangs have been ordered since ordering began in late January.
Half of the orders are for V-6 models, which feature a new, high-performance, all-aluminum Duratec 3.7-liter dual overhead-cam (DOHC) Twin Independent Variable Cam Timing (Ti-VCT) engine. This new engine delivers 305 horsepower and an expected best-in-class EPA fuel efficiency of 30 mpg on the highway.
“The new engine transforms Mustang,” Ling said. “Everything people love about the car lives on, and now under the hood is a V-6 engine that uses premium technology to deliver the power, the feel, the fuel efficiency, even the sound of the best sports cars in the world.”
“Take rates” on the California Special series, which harkens back to the original 1968 Mustang, are triple the expected levels. And the first-ever Mustang Club of America (MCA) Special Edition package generated three times more orders than expected.
The orders have also been requesting record levels of new technology, including navigation, high-intensity discharge headlamps and rear-view cameras.
And 41 percent of orders are for Mustang GT’s. The Mustang GT’s modern 5.0-liter four-valve, Ti-VCT V-8 engine delivers 412 horsepower and 390 ft.-lb. or torque.
Approximately 9 percent of the 2011 Mustang orders are for Shelby GT500 models, which are powered by an all-new aluminum-block 5.4-liter supercharged V-8 engine, producing 550 horsepower and 510 ft.-lb. of torque.
“Mustang is ready for a new generation of buyers,” Ling said. “With new high-tech and fuel-efficient engines, class-leading connectivity and infotainment options as well as signature style and performance, Mustang is poised to continue its legacy as America’s favorite sports car.”

Lincoln MKT Earns Five-Star Crash Test Rating

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHSTA) awarded the 2010 Lincoln MKT top ratings for frontal and side-impact crash tests. Ford Motor Company has more U.S. government five-star ratings and more Top Safety Pick ratings than any other automaker.
“Leading the industry in both five-star crash test ratings and Top Safety Pick awards is very significant because customers increasingly rely on NHTSA and IIHS ratings when choosing a new vehicle,” said Susan Cischke, Ford’s group vice president of Sustainability, Environment and Safety Engineering.
With its optional crash-protection, crash-avoidance and driver-awareness features combined with its design, spaciousness, and fuel economy, the all-new MKT has it all.
“Our research shows that MKT customers are tech-savvy, and luxury vehicle buyers tend to be early adopters of new safety, audio, infotainment and powertrain features,” said Kate Pearce, Lincoln MKT marketing manager. “Not only is the MKT packed with standard luxury features and state-of-the-art technologies, it is unsurpassed in its segment for highway fuel economy.”
The Lincoln MKT features Ford’s Trinity Front Crash Body Architecture. The strong body structure is specially designed to absorb energy, featuring octagonal front frame rails and front structural members designed to absorb and redirect forces away from the passenger. The Lincoln MKT also includes Side Protection And Cabin Enhancement Architecture (SPACE) to optimize side-impact occupant protection.
The MKT features Ford’s Personal Safety System, tailoring the airbag and safety belt functions to the individual passenger and the accident circumstances.
“The MKT’s array of advanced safety technologies raised the bar for luxury vehicles and pushed the new frontier of ‘active’ crash-avoidance features that help drivers avoid or reduce the severity of accidents,” said Steve Kozak, chief engineer, Ford Safety Systems.

Ford Enthusiasts in South Africa Will Attempt to Set World Record
Ford fans all over South Africa will come together this Saturday, February 27, 2010 in an attempt to set the world record for the largest Ford parade. The event will take place at the Phakisa Freeway racetrack.
“This is set to be an historic even for Ford and we take immense pride in the loyalty and enthusiasm the Ford fans continue to show for the brand. There will be a vast array of Ford models coming together in support of the Blue Oval and we are excited at the prospect,” says Jacques Brent, vice president for marketing, sales and service.
In order to break the record, the parade will need to be 3.2 km long, with vehicles no less than two car-lengths apart. The attempts will be certified by the Guinness World of Records.
“Ford has a long and illustrious history in South Africa with many customers enjoying fond memories of the brand from years gone by. The record attempt is sure to be a very nostalgic affair as thousands of Fords from different eras come together in a unique display of Ford machinery,” adds Brent.
The day will be filled with other fun activities for the participating Ford enthusiasts, including demonstration laps, sky divers, food booths and a flea market. There will also be a Show & Shine event, with some of the most impressive personalized Fords in the country on display.
